Search and Rescue--Life Saving Map

Search and rescue can move beyond paper maps and GPS devices to digital maps.

Back when I was a local emergency management director we counted on Search and Rescue to providing a cadre of volunteers to support wilderness search operations.  Typically there would be one Sheriff's Office Deputy and a bunch of volunteers either on foot, on horseback or even four wheel drive vehicles that would aid in searches.

After spending the day today at the annual ESRI Users Conference and looking at national "one nation" approaches to mapping it is good to finish the day with highlighting a "boots on the ground" application.  See Life Saving Maps at the ESRI public safety website.  There is a seven minute video there that highlights what one search and rescue organization has done to move into the digital age.  I'm sure they would share their system with anyone who is interested.

Lastly, thanks to all the volunteers out there that donate their time and resources to the search and rescue mission.  It is good to know we have people like you who will give up their personal time to help people out.
