Social Media Engagement Strategy

This takes a look at ii from a Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs perspective.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs has been adapted to any number of different types of social issues. In this short article on The Hierarchy of Needs for an Engaged Social Media Audience you get the pyramid, but then some explanation for the different levels.

I found the perspective offered to be appropriate based on my experience. First and foremost you have to be "present" and then "engaged" in social media for it to be an effective tool for you to use. I am still waiting for most emergency management agencies in my sphere of knowledge to really engage with social media. It does appear that we'll need to have the dinosaurs retire and the next generation of digitally literate and engaged leaders to step up and take on the mantel of leadership on the topic of social media.

If you are wondering how fast change is happening, think about this -- when President Obama took office almost seven years ago, the dominant handheld device was the BlackBerry phone. It served very well as a phone and then for sending and receiving email. The iPhone came out in June of 2007. Look what has been wrought in only eight short years. A revolution in handheld computing, the iPad and other tablets, touch PC/laptops and a whole boatload of applications that are changing everything from shopping to how you get your ride to the airport to where you stay when you get to your destination.

The pace is picking up!
