Work is a blessing that provides so much for supporting all aspects of our life. It enables us to have a place to live, cloths to wear, food to eat. Work should not be some drudgery to be abhorred, it is the basis for much of who are and what we do with our lives. Work should be fulfilling to those engaged in it.
These thoughts are of course coming from a man who's wife says he is a workaholic. So, I might be a bit biased in my thinking. BUT, if you talk to one of the nine million people looking for work today they will tell you how important work is to their mental and physical well being.
You may not be in the perfect job. The job may be good and the commute is awful. There are so many things about work that we can dwell on that are negative--yet the opportunity to be productive is perhaps the most endearing quality about work. I've been thinking about this a lot and for me I need to be able to make a difference. It is what drives me. The status quo is not for me. I'm looking to change things for the better in some shape or form. It is one of the qualities of emergency management that drew me to the profession, this ability to make a difference in the lives of people. Working on their behalf when they don't even realize the benefits that are being given to them until disaster strikes.
Sunday night I was driving down a deserted road around 10PM. The wind was blowing hard, it would snow later that night. There was a person walking, pushing a shopping cart with all their earthly possessions in it. My mind thought about, "Where are they going at this time of night? How is it that they ended up being where they are now--homeless and trudging down a road, no sidewalks, in the dark of night with the wind howling." They were far from any shelter.
If you are reading this, you are certainly not that person. If you don't have a job or are about to lose your job--you have hope. Hope will get you through the coming weeks and maybe months. You have skills and a desire to work. This along with persistence will lead you to your next position. Hang in there! When I hear of a job I always post it here and their are other great places to look for jobs online.
Give thanks today for what you have--we have so much. Now I'm headed off for a hot shower after exercising. It is one of the small things I enjoy in life everyday. I do so today thinking sad thoughts about that person pushing the shopping cart. I'm guessing there will be no hot shower for them and no next work day to be thinking about--only a day-to-day survival.
