The Untold Story of NotPetya

"Global corporations are simply too interconnected, information security too complex, attack surfaces too broad to protect against state-trained hackers bent on releasing the next world-shaking worm."

Reading this article from Wired magazine should make you sleep less soundly, The Untold Story of NotPetya, the Most Devastating Cyberattack in History.

I do believe that determined attackers can gain entrance into almost any computer system and its data files. Thus, it is not if, but when, there will be another deliberate attack like NotPetya that takes down other portions of our critical infrastructure — like the power grid. You might feel helpless or hopeless to stop this, but if we all begin to take computer security more seriously and transfer that concern to our organizations, public and private, we can make a difference.

Not all earthquakes are catastrophic and not all cyberattacks will decimate our virtual world if we take measures today to mitigate our collective risks. IT leaders everywhere need to ask for what they need to invest in and protect their systems. When there is pushback from budgeteers, give them the linked article to read.
