Enhanced 9-1-1 marks its 20-year Anniversary in Seminole County

Is evolving to cover mobile phones and Internet telephony.

Last week Seminole County, Fla., marked 20 years of enhanced 9-1-1 service. "In October 1986" said the county in a release, "the municipalities of Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, Sanford, Winter Springs, along with Seminole County Public Safety and the 9-1-1 Office implemented the Enhanced 9-1-1 system in Seminole County."

Enhanced 9-1-1 displays the address of the caller on a computer screen, even if the caller is unable to provide an address to the 9-1-1 operator. Enhanced 9-1-1 is still primarily a land-line type technology, but is evolving to cover mobile phones and Internet phone service as well.

To observe the occasion, the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners will present a resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Enhanced 9-1-1 system in Seminole County on December 12, 2006.
