The Oso, Wash., mudslide claimed the lives of at least 41 residents. First responders and volunteers converged on a hectic scene, having to dig through up to 70 feet of mud and debris to try and rescue missing locals.
The American Red Cross has been on the scene as well. Mike Byrne is the division disaster executive for the Pacific Division of the American Red Cross and has aided in the recovery effort. He talked at the April 15 Emergency Management Summit in San Francisco about those efforts and how the Red Cross can aid community preparedness and response.
There are many ways the American Red Cross can help communities and individuals before and after a disaster hits and offers aid not available from other sources like the government.
