The DEM, which is completely online, including the dissertation, is being touted by the university as a degree of career advancement rather than for those who want to teach and is unique in the United States.
The program will be led by subject matter expert Tamara Mouras, dean of the university’s College of Safety and Emergency Services. She is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
The program focuses on cutting-edge emergency management-related industry trends, topics and research and emphasizes theoretical as well as practical emergency management leadership components, according to the DEM website.
Courses include: Managing Homeland Security; Disaster Preparedness and Planning; Critical Thinking for Doctoral Learners; Psychosocial Aspects of Emergency Management; and Advanced Special Topics in Emergency Management, and others among the major requirements.
“We are excited to launch the Doctor of Emergency Management," Misti Kill, CSU’s senior vice provost for academic affairs, said in a statement.
“The degree is meant for scholar-practitioners who seek to advance the field of emergency management,” said Kill, who also serves on FEMA’s National Advisory Council and was part of the team that led the program's development. “Graduates of this doctoral program will enhance research and knowledge while bringing further innovation to the field.”
