Corpus Christi Taking Katrina Relief Over Call Center, Web Site

Will help ease load on Volunteer Center and United Way

Corpus Christi, Texas, City Manager George K. "Skip" Noe activated the City of Corpus Christi Customer Call Center yesterday to help take information from people interested in volunteering in the local Hurricane Katrina relief effort

Interested volunteers can call 826-CITY (826-2489) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today to register. In addition, people can now register on the city Web site to volunteer or donate items. The online registration form is under the "Katrina Assistance" link under the current information column.

The city's customer call center will help ease the load on the Volunteer Center and United Way, both of which have been overwhelmed by calls from the public to offer assistance. Ten city employees will be on hand at the call center Sunday, which will supplement the three call-takers at the Volunteer Center and three call takers at the local United Way 2-1-1 office. Saturday alone, the local 2-1-1 line, and the Volunteer Center, each logged approximately 300 calls.
