The theme of this year's National Public Health Week is Take the First Step! Preparedness and Public Health Threats: Addressing the Unique Needs of the Nation's Vulnerable Populations.
"We all want residents in Corpus Christi to be protected from health dangers that could arise in the event of an emergency, such as a disease outbreak or natural disaster," said Annette Rodriguez, Interim Director of Public Health. "Today, it is urgent that we adequately prepare for threats to our health," Rodriguez added.
According to health officials, Americans across the nation remain largely unprepared for public health emergencies, and many do not have any emergency plans in place. Vulnerable populations, which may include mothers with children still living at home as well as schools and people with chronic health care needs, are particularly at risk in the event of a disaster.
The Public Health Preparedness Fair will feature information booths from local resources and agencies. There will also be a blood drive by the Coastal Bend Blood Center, a tour of the Corpus Christi Fire Department's Safety House, free flu shots for anyone four years of age or older and free blood pressure screenings. In addition, the Corpus Christi Police Department's Auto Theft Prevention Program will be offering free VIN etching for vehicles, and Animal Care Services will offer microchipping for cats and dogs at a cost of $20 each.
