San Francisco Installing Cameras in Additional Housing Authority Locations

Continued campaign against violent crime

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom this week announced that the San Francisco Housing Authority will be installing approximately 70 safety cameras in Housing Authority sites across the city in an effort to curb violent crime. The cameras are considered a critical addition to the mayor's anti-violence plan.

Speaking about the effectiveness of the cameras, San Francisco Housing Authority Executive Director Gregg Fortner said, "Safety cameras have been an effective tool in monitoring public space in the Housing Authority's senior/disabled housing communities for several years. During our annual public hearing process with our residents, the need for this program to expand to our family sites is evident by every community requesting some level of service. We hope to expand the program over the next several months as funding is identified."

Newsom called the installation of the cameras "vital to the city's safety," saying, "These actions will help bring peace to public housing residents by implementing the most advanced technologies available to apprehend criminal offenders. Our commitment to anti-violence strategies in unchanged. We will continue to modify our plans based on the events on the ground, until the quality of life and safety of residents in troubled neighborhoods reaches an acceptable level."

All cameras will be monitored at a centralized location.
