Rural Kentucky Next to Receive Federally-Funded Broadband

The Bluegrass State will receive more than $30 million over then next six years to close the digital divide.

(TNS) -- AT&T says it will extend broadband to more than 84,000 rural homes and businesses in Kentucky over the next six years with the help of federal funds. The company will receive $30 million annually for the next six years through the Federal Communications Commission's Connect America Fund. The fund was created in late 2011 to help deploy broadband to rural areas where the service isn't economically viable.

AT&T will deliver broadband at speeds of at least 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads in rural areas. Details on precisely where such service will be extended wasn't immediately available, according to an AT&T spokesman.

Previously, the FCC announced that Windstream Communications Inc. would receive nearly $21.6 million to extend broadband to more than 62,000 homes and businesses in rural Kentucky, including approximately 127 in Union County.
