$20 Million For Public Safety In Houston

Mayor Bill White thanks Houston's congressional delegation

Mayor Bill White thanked Houston's congressional delegation this week, in particular U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, for their timely help in securing $20 million in unspent federal money to fund crime-fighting and other public safety efforts in Houston.

"The hard work put in by Senator Hutchison and Congressman DeLay on this was significant. It was great teamwork," said Mayor White. "This money will support our programs to tamp down crime and make the city safer in the wake of Houston's rapid growth. We have been pretty successful in that effort, and this will make us even more effective."

"Securing this funding is a great step in the right direction to ensure Houston's public safety standards are met," said Sen. Hutchison, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. "While this is a significant development, there is more work to be done. Mayor White, Congressman DeLay and I will continue to work together as we move forward."

The money being routed here is unspent Justice Department funding that will be used for law enforcement, fire and emergency services costs associated with the influx of hurricane evacuees to Houston.
