Cranston, R.I., Piloting Automated Speed Enforcement

Pending legislation will allow the city to expand the program

The city of Cranston, R.I., has begun a pilot using Nestor Traffic Systems' mobile speed enforcement units to catch speeding drivers and send them a ticket in the mail. So far, the city has only purchased one of the units. The city is waiting for pending Rhode Island legislation which will allow cities throughout the state to use automated traffic enforcement. After that, Cranston's Board of Contract and Purchase will review the pilot and decide whether the pilot program becomes and enforcement program. NTS will then provide the city with up to five of the mobile speed enforcement units.

"We are leading the nation in a traffic safety effort. There are too many speeders and too many lives needlessly being placed at risk in our city. With Nestor's technology solution, we can dramatically improve traffic safety. There will be fewer traffic violations and greater safety because of the foresight to implement this innovative program. I want Cranston to be the safest city to drive in. This adds to the overall quality of life in our community," Stephen Laffey, mayor of Cranston, said.

"The city of Cranston is pioneering the automated enforcement of traffic laws. As a Rhode Island company we are excited to provide Rhode Islanders with the traffic safety benefits generated by our leading edge technology," William B. Danzell, the chairman and CEO of Nestor stated.
