Local Govt. Law Enforcement Agencies Get Technology Grants in Ala.

Nearly $1.5 million awarded to upgrade patrol car and communications technology

Alabama Rep. Bud Cramer, a member of the Commerce, Justice, State, and the Judiciary Appropriations Subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives, recently presented $180,000 to Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett for law enforcement technology and equipment upgrades.

The Morgan County Sheriff's office will use the funding to help purchase new equipment for its helicopter.

"Our law enforcement officers are out there everyday on the front lines putting their lives at risk to keep our children and neighborhoods safe," said Cramer. "I want to make sure that they have the most up-to-date technology."

Cramer presented a total of $1.3 million to Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning and the city of Huntsville Police Chief Rex Reynolds. The Huntsville Police Department received $800,000 to upgrade the department's patrol cars to ensure that the mobile data terminals are not harmed by electrical malfunctions. It will also be used to help the department participate in a regional law enforcement data-sharing network. The Madison County Sheriff's office received $500,000. It will be used to help the Sheriff's office update its communication system. The new system will allow the Sheriff to share data with other agencies to better coordinate a response during an emergency.

Also this month, Rep. Cramer presented $180,000 to Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett for law enforcement technology and equipment upgrades. The Morgan County Sheriff's office will use these funds to help purchase a forward looking infrared (FLIR) device, a spotlight and other equipment for its helicopter.

The above funding is from the FY 2005 Omnibus Appropriations Act.
