Michigan Picks Agency To Implement Statewide 2-1-1 Calling

2-1-1 connects individuals and families in need to the appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies

TheMichigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has designated "Michigan 2-1-1" as the statewide 2-1-1 coordinating agency from April 1 through March 31, 2007. The MPSC also directed "Michigan 2-1-1" to file, by Feb. 1, 2007, information on funding, advances made in 2-1-1 availability in Michigan, and any changes in its original application.

The Michigan Telecommunications Act (Public Act 235 of 2005)directed the MPSC to designate an entity to serve as the state's 2-1-1 coordinating agency. The designated agency is charged with assisting and providing information and resources in implementing 2-1-1 service in the state.

"Michigan 2-1-1," located in Lansing, filed an application on Feb. 16 seeking to be named as the state's 2-1-1 coordinating agency. There are currently eight 2-1-1 call centers covering 24 of the 83 counties.

In approving the application, the MPSC notes that the review and renewal process established in today's order will enable "Michigan 2 1 1" to actively seek long-term funding sources and to more fully develop interdependent relationships with all human service providers within the state.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in July 2000 reserved the 2-1-1 dialing code for community information and referral services. The 2-1-1 code was intended as an easy-to-remember and universally-recognizable number that would enable a critical connection between individuals and families in need and the appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies.
