New Mexico State Police Automate Ticket-Writing Process

Officers save time by scanning drivers' licenses and printing tickets in pilot project

State police in New Mexico will begin using a new ticket writing system this week. The new system, being piloted in San Mguel, Sandoval and Santa Fe counties, will allow officers to scan a motorist's driver's license into a computer and print the motorist out a ticket instead of having to write the ticket out by hand. The motorists will then be asked to sign an electronic pad acknowledging he received the ticket.

And since the state's Motor Vehicle Division recently began issuing drivers' licenses with magnetic strips on the back that contain data, data about the motorist can be stored in the computer's memory to be downloaded later.

The goal of using the new technology is to speed up the process of writing a ticket. Officials also hope to be able to communicate faster and eliminate paperwork and handwritten errors once other agencies adopt the technology. The technology could also later be used for accident reports and DWI arrests.
