New York City Subways Under Increased Security

"If you see something, say something"

On October 6, Mayor Bloomberg announced that a specific terrorist threat had been received from overseas against the New York City subway system. In a video on the Mayor's Web site, Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Kelly, and an FBI official presented what information could be released, and announced increased security in subway stations, including bag searches, and the presence of undercover police officers. "If you see something, say something," said Bloomberg, suggesting that passengers noting something suspicious call 311, or 911 for an emergency. Bloomberg stated that he would continue to ride the subway to work and he encouraged other New Yorkers to do likewise.

"We have never before had a specific threat to the subway system," said Bloomberg, and this threat's importance was therefore significant.
