Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Ridge announced on August 1 that DHS has raised the threat level of the financial services sector in New York City, Northern New Jersey and Washington, D.C. to Code Orange.
Secretary Ridge said that the federal government acquired new data on where al-Qaeda would like to attack, which lead to the resulting threat-level change.
This is the first time the Department of Homeland Security has used the threat level status in such a targeted way. The threat level for the country, yellow, remains the same.
