Tennessee Homeland Security Director Steps Down

Jerry Humble will be leaving the position effective May 31

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen announced that Major General Jerry Humble USMC (Ret), Director, Governor's Office of Homeland Security, will be leaving the position effective May 31 for personal reasons. General Humble has served as the Director since January 2003.

Statement from Major General Jerry Humble:

"We now have a very comprehensive and proactive program that encompasses federal, state and local governments, industry and our citizens working together to protect the state of Tennessee. This success is directly attributable to the leadership, support, and the exceptional communication, cooperation and coordination among city and county Mayors, Sheriffs, Police and Fire Chiefs, Emergency Management Directors, my fellow Cabinet Members, the Legislators, industry leadership, as well as our federal partners.

"I have worked for and observed many great leaders in my service around the world; Governor Bredesen is one of the very best I have known and he will always have my support. Now, after 36 years of government service, I must leave government service and attend to some personal issues."

Statement from Governor Phil Bredesen:

"General Humble's service to the State of Tennessee as my Director of Homeland Security has been truly exemplary.

"As I expected when I appointed him, he has made a difference. After 36 years of selfless service, I wish him my best. We have begun the process of finding a highly qualified person to carry on the great work underway at the Office of Homeland Security. I intend to fill this important position in the very near future and will make an official announcement at that time."
