Ventura County Deploys Identity System

Fingerprints and smart cards secure handling of evidence

The Ventura County, Calif., Sheriff's Department deployed a fingerprint and smart-card authentication system for staff working in the crime lab. The BNX Authentication System is designed to increase security for evidence processed in the department's crime laboratory. The system will require conclusive authentication of crime lab staff before gaining network access or transferring evidence within the department's electronic laboratory management system.

"Maintaining the integrity of the evidence that is processed in our crime lab is of supreme importance," said Yvonne Armstrong, information systems manager of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. "With the heightened security provided by the BNX authentication solution, we can be sure that only authorized individuals are able to access evidence records and perform evidence transfers."

With the system, administrators can centrally manage all user authentication and sign-on activity and insert authentication events at key points within an electronic process or transaction. By requiring authentication of crime lab employees, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department is able to associate each action with a specific user authentication event. This allows the department to generate a detailed record of evidence handling, if needed.
