In the future, what might a new startup allow its customers to design?

Answer: their own children

Austen Heinz’s Cambrian Genomics is a startup focused on DNA manipulation that would allow its customers to design living beings on a computer and then have them created. This rose bush, for instance, has been genetically engineered to glow in the dark.

Heinz also mentioned in an interview that he thinks people will be designing their own children within 20 years. The company is not yet allowing such services, but the proposition has concerned at least a few onlookers. 

“We have to take seriously people like Austen Heinz who say they want to modify future generations of human beings and upgrade the human species,” said Marcy Darnovsky, executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, SFGate reported. “I think that technical project is far more complicated than they acknowledge.
