What's the latest thing to go up for public vote on the Internet?

Answer: new Monopoly pieces

Despite the somewhat recent mishaps, so to speak, that occurred when the public descended upon the Internet to vote for such things as the name of a humpback whale (Mister Splashy Pants) and a polar research vessel (Boaty McBoatface), game-maker Hasbro is taking a similar chance — it's letting those who troll the Internet vote for the new pieces in Monopoly.

The difference in this vote, however, is that Hasbro has made the selection more multiple choice versus fill in the blank.

All eight of the current game pieces (the battleship, boot, car, cat, Scottie dog, thimble, top hat and wheelbarrow) are up for replacement — or could be kept individually. And there are lots of choices: sliced bread, a Mr. Monopoly emoji, a fish, crying with laughter emoji, sunglasses, a T-Rex and a hashtag, to name a few.

Voting ends Jan. 31, and the winning game pieces will be announced March 19.
