How does an algorithm watch movie trailers?

Answer: by recognizing certain objects and assigning a label

Object detection is something humans take for granted. We can generally look at an outline or a blurry picture of something and determine what it is. For computers, however, this is much more difficult. Thanks to machine learning and pattern recognition, computers are now able to understand visual cues and associate it with a larger category.

For example, a computer algorithm can see a piece of fabric hanging on someone’s neck, and recognize it as a tie, even though part of it is obstructed by a suit jacket. An example of how computers recognize objects, created by coding studio Støj, applies object recognition application to the trailer of The Wolf of Wall Street and shows various presentations of results.
