What could be next big thing in wearable tech?

Answer: Google Hat

While Google Glass was ultimately an unsuccessful venture into the world of wearables, Google is at it again — on Tuesday, the company filed a patent for a hat-mounted camera that would be used to record video and photos, and upload them directly to social media.

The product is still in early development, and its current illustrations — a classic baseball cap with an extra-thick brim outfitted with a camera — suggest it might not be aesthetically appealing to a hip crowd. But what would make Google’s device different from other head-mounted cameras like the GoPro is that, like the tech used in Google Glass, it would be able to connect to a wide variety of social media platforms, such as Facebook and Snapchat, rather than just YouTube.

The patent states that the hat could be used in two ways: “for an interactive session with a remote user” —  so streaming sessions such as the Facebook's Live feature — or “to interact with an emergency situation routing system” so that in an emergency, first responders would be able to receive information such as the wearer’s location and stream live video to help better assist those in need.
