Answer: San Francisco Giants rookie pitcher Gaylord Perry hit his first major league home run
One day in 1962 at San Francisco's Candlestick Park (which has since gone through numerous name changes, but will always be referred to as "The Stick" by locals and diehard fans), SF Chronicle sportswriter Harry Jupiter told Manager Alvin Dark, "This Perry kid's going to hit some home runs for you."
Dark's reply, according to Sports Illustrated, was: "There'll be a man on the moon before Gaylord Perry hits a home run."
Sure enough, seven years later, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon -- and Perry hit his first major league home run less than an hour later.
