What do scientists think could patrol the oceans of the future?

Answer: a giant robotic jellyfish

Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have created a large robotic jellyfish they say could autonomously patrol oceans for surveillance and environmental monitoring, UPI.com reported.

The robotic jellyfish is 5 feet, 7 inches long and weighs 170 pounds, and has been named Cyro -- it is a follow-up to an earlier robot dubbed RoboJelly, which was about the size of a typical jellyfish found along beaches.

Both robots were developed as part of a multi-university, nationwide $5 million project funded by U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research, according to UPI.
