Why did a rainforest tribe in southern Guyana build a drone?

Answer: to catch illegal loggers

Southern Guyana’s Wapichan community, an indigenous group of about 9,000, built a drone by watching do-it-yourself YouTube videos to help stop the illegal logging they knew was happening near their homes.

A GoPro camera was attached to the drone and configured to snap shots every two seconds, and the drone’s flights confirmed what the tribe already knew — people were illegally logging to the South, near the border of Brazil. The community is using the technology to create a map of how they live and use the land, and how the logging is interfering with their way of life.

“We are hoping to get them to recognize that these maps will actually help the government to resolve issues,” community leader Nicholas Fredericks told Quartz. “Without our lands, our futures are in jeopardy.”
