Invented by Brooklyn-born inventor George Lerner, the original toy contained only plastic body parts and the child was required to supply his own potato. This changed over the years to where Mr. Potato's head also was plastic. But compared with most of today’s kid’s toys, Mr. Potato Head is lacking in true technology -- most toys today have an energy source with substantially more power.
