How is Morocco decreasing dependence on foreign energy?

Answer: solar power

Earlier this year, Morocco turned on a massive solar plant — called Noor I — in the Saharan town of Ourrzazate. The plant, which extends for thousands of acres and can generate 160 megawatts, will help the nation decrease carbon emissions and its energy imports, which today account for 97 percent of energy consumed nationally.

The plant is composed of about 500,000 curved mirrors, each about 40 feet tall. Future installations called Noor II and Noor III are part of Morocco’s plan to generate 42 percent of its energy at home. Once completed, the grid will cover 6,000 acres and be capable of generating 580 megawatts.
