How did one department of transportation reduce collisions by 60 percent?

Answer: with a diverging diamond interchange

By flipping two opposing lanes of traffic under a highway, an arrangement also known as a diverging diamond interchange (DDI), Springfield, Mo., reduced collisions at one intersection by 60 percent during a five-month period, Fortune reported.

Since the first American DDI was constructed in 2009, dozens more have sprung up around the nation. The arrangement makes it more difficult for drivers to enter ramps going the wrong direction and eliminates left-hand turns through opposing traffic, as demonstrated by the video below provided by the Florida Department of Transportation.
