How long until more than 1 billion vehicles are connected to their smart city environments?

Answer: 10 years

By 2025, Navigant Research estimates that more than 1.2 billion vehicles will be connected to their surroundings. The future, claims a Forbes op-ed writer from the research company, is now.

Between electric vehicles, connected vehicle technology and vehicle sharing arrangements — a market that all major automakers are interested in joining, according to the writer — the appearance of America’s roadways is changing fast. And with as much as two-thirds of the world’s population expected to be living in urban areas by 2050, sole ownership of a vehicle is expected to be rare by that time.
