New York lawmakers want to give an insurance break to drivers using what technology?

Answer: dashcams

A new bill from the New York Legislature, titled A10392, would provide a 5 percent discount on automobile insurance for non-commercial vehicles operating a dashcam. Dashcams are helpful for insurance companies for their ability to resolve insurance claims, and for the courts, which use the recordings as evidence, the bill's text explains. The law could also assist vehicle inspectors and would prompt the commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles to establish standards for the technology.

“Plus, if motorists feel that they’re being taped by a dashcam, then maybe, just maybe, they will think twice before engaging in reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accident,” said state Sen. Jose Peralta, one of the bill's supporters.

If passed, New York would be become the first state to create such a law applied to non-commercial drivers.
