What technology did researchers use to hack into a Corvette's brake system?

Answer: a text message

In a video posted to YouTube, shown below, researchers at the University of California at San Diego demonstrate how they can hack into a vehicle's on-board diagnostics (OBD) device (which insurance companies use to monitor speed and location) by sending a text message to the OBD dongle's cellular radio.

This hack, according to The Verge, could be modified to access most modern vehicles.
