Sorting through 59 million menu items allowed researchers from Co.Design and Food Genius to determine which foods set them apart from the crowd. In other words, which foods make Arkansas Arkansas, or Alabama Alabama? In both cases, the answer is ranch dressing.
Alaska is unique for its cinnamon and cookies. North Carolina loves slaw, dip, chicken tenders and grits. New York is big on eggplant. Oregon has a love for prawns and hazelnuts. And cheesesteaks were edged out by hoagies in Pennsylvania.
Co.Design published on its website the top five distinguishing menu items for each state along with stats that show how they compare to the national average.
