How will AT&T's Airgig technology deliver gigabit Internet service?

Answer: on top of existing power lines

On Sept. 20, AT&T announced a new wireless technology called Airgig that uses existing power lines to deliver gigabit-speed broadband. The technology, which is scheduled to enter testing early next year, places wireless routers atop utility poles that can work together to pass along data. Google is exploring the technology as an option to deliver last-mile service to its Google Fiber customers, The Verge reported, while Facebook is also exploring similar technology for deployment in San Jose, Calif.
