How does a new smartphone technology know how the user is feeling?

Answer: wireless signals

By sending wireless signals, a new technology called EQ-Radio, developed by researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, can determine with 87 percent accuracy (according to the researchers) the emotional state of the user. The device works by measuring breathing and heartbeats, similar to how an electrocardiogram monitor works, except no contact point need be attached to the subject.

A video on Phys.org explains how each heartbeat and breath's wave pattern is isolated and fed into a machine-learning algorithm that determines whether the user is excited, sad, angry or happy.
