What new smart device may replace traditional parking enforcement methods like the boot?

Answer: the Barnacle

When drivers have loads of unpaid parking tickets, they are likely to one day find a bright yellow boot clamped to their vehicle's rim. The boot is an enforcement method that's been around since the 1940s, but a new method that utilizes smart technology is working to streamline and simplify the process.

Called the Barnacle — because it sticks to the windshield with 750 pounds of force — the 20-pound piece of bright-yellow plastic makes it easier for violators to regain use of their vehicle once fines have been paid: They're given a number to call and can pay all outstanding tickets immediately, at which point they're given a code to unlock the Barnacle and remove it from their car.

The Barnacle also makes it easier for tow trucks to haul the vehicle away should the owner choose to ignore the problem.
