Which cities have the best public transit systems?

Answer: New York and San Francisco

The University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies released a report following research that examined public transit systems in 46 of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country. The focus of the study, called Access Across America: Transit 2014, was to identify how accessible a city’s jobs were via public transportation.

The study ranked each city, weighting for accessibility to jobs. Researchers also generated heat maps for each city, with lighter colors indicating that fewer jobs can be reached within 30 minutes, and darker colors indicating greater accessibility.

The top five cities were:

  1. New York
  2. San Francisco
  3. Los Angeles
  4. Washington, D.C.
  5. Chicago
