What did MIT create to better understand what humans find scary?

Answer: a Nightmare Machine

Using a new system dubbed the "Nightmare Machine," which is essentially a series of algorithms, researches at MIT are working to find the root of horror by generating ghoulish faces. User feedback then lets them know which approach made the scariest image. With enough information, according to Quartz, Artificial Intelligence could theoretically generate the sum of human fears. Here's just one example of imagery generated by the Nightmare Machine:
