What might happen to voters in Michigan who take a ballot selfie?

Answer: Their vote could be revoked.

Laws stating whether a voter's ballot should remain secret differ across the nation: It's now legal in 20 states and illegal in 17 — but remains unclear in 13. Even in some states where it's illegal, however, the law is not enforced.

Michigan is not one of those states, according to Gizmodo, which reported that if you live in Michigan, "don’t take a ballot selfie or you could be punished by having your vote revoked."

Following an appeals court ruling made last month, Chief Judge R. Guy Cole criticized the majority for allowing Michigan to force voters to choose “between their freedom of expression and their right to vote.” As Slate.com reported after the ruling, Cole noted in his dissent that the penalty for taking and sharing a ballot selfie is the nullification of one’s vote.

“In permitting the loss of such a fundamental right," he wrote, "the majority puts the administrative interests of the state above the individual rights of the citizens of Michigan.”
