On November 6, the South Africa Reserve Bank began circulating five bank notes featuring former president Nelson Mandela in Pretoria, South Africa. Mandela is on the front of each rand, and the reverse retains the images of the five big animals that were on previous bills. "The new banknotes incorporate state-of-the-art security, technical and design features such as intaglio printing, watermarks, unique numbering, security threads, fluorescent ink, microlettering and color-changing ink," according to Western Cape Government.
The South African politician was the nation's president from 1994-1999 and has won numerous awards, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela is known as a symbol of anti-apartheid and for serving 27 years in prison. In March 2011, Google donated $1.25 million to the Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre to digitize the president's legacy.
