Why is a group of towns in South New Jersey upset with Verizon?

Answer: they claim the company abandoned its networks there

A group of cities, towns and counties in southern New Jersey is asking the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to investigate Verizon's business practices, claiming the company has stopped maintaining its copper landline infrastructure in that region.

“In more affluent communities, Verizon has begun to phase out copper with more modern fiber” while “ignoring these issues in communities like ours,” Hopewell Township Committeeman Gregory Facemyer said in the towns’ announcement of its petition.

Verizon denies the claim and says it has continued to invest in its networks to keep up with the "fierce competition for communication services" that exists throughout the state.
