What are the top two workplace tools, according to a recent study?

Answer: email and the Internet

According to a recent study published by the Pew Research Center, 61 percent of survey respondents cited email as being “very important” for their jobs, while 54 percent said the same of the Internet. Among office workers, 78 percent cited email as important and 68 percent cited the Internet as important.

Social media, conversely, was cited as an important workplace tool by just 4 percent of respondents.

While some believe technology can be distracting, 46 percent said their digital tools made them more productive. And just 7 percent said technology made their productivity fall. A third of respondents said new technologies increased the length of their workday, while 39 percent said digital tools make their work life more flexible.

Among respondents who worked outside an office, nearly 60 percent said the Internet and cell phones were “very important” to do their jobs.
