Can a 6-pound smartphone case cut your screen time in half?

Answer: It did for its creator.

Logan Ivey came up with a unique but effective solution for cutting down on his screen time. After dumbphones and time-limiting apps and all the other hacks failed, he decided to make his phone itself very difficult to use. Like, very difficult.

“I asked myself, ‘How can I keep all the functionality of my phone, but still use it less?’” Ivey told Fast Company. “Then I thought, like, what if my phone was just really heavy and inconvenient to use?”

The result was the 6 Pound Phone Case, which is exactly what its name suggests. Built from stainless steel, the case weighs a whopping 6 pounds and requires an Allen wrench to take on and off. Furthermore, it’s designed like the cumbersome bricks that were satellite phones in the ’80s, making it not only heavy but annoying to use for very long.

Ivey partnered with Matter Neuroscience to develop the case, which is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign. And it really does work for getting you off your phone — Ivey’s screen time has gone down from four and a half hours a week to two.

“Those little moments in life where you just instinctively reach for your phone, I don’t do anymore,” Ivey said, “because I either don’t have it on me or it’s too heavy.”
