Want some life wisdom from a future version of yourself? A new large language model from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) geared toward younger generations gives them an opportunity to have a conversation with themselves 30 years from now.
Future You was created by MIT’s Media Lab to give users an increased sense of “future self-continuity,” which is the continuity you feel with your future self. The bot starts by asking users about themselves, including things like relationships, goals, professional situation and other aspects of your history. Once it gets an idea of who you are, it uses that data to create a profile of yourself in 30 years. That profile is then linked to a customized version of OpenAI’s GTP-3.5 model, so you can have a conversation with it. You can even upload an image of yourself that the AI will age.
“Our system allows users to chat with a relatable yet AI-powered virtual version of their future selves that is tuned to their future goals and persona qualities,” the researchers said. “The ‘Future You’ character also adopts the persona of an age-progressed image of the user’s present self.”
