The saga of the blue checkmarks on X continues. Back when the platform was still Twitter, users could receive a blue checkmark on their profile for verifying their identity with the platform. It was a trusted symbol then. However, when Tesla CEO Elon Musk purchased Twitter in 2022, he eliminated the identity verification system and instead made the checkmarks a symbol of whether or not a user subscribed to the platform’s new paid X Premium.
But not everyone wanted to admit that they paid for X Premium, and fortunately there was a setting that allowed users to hide their blue checkmarks if they wanted to. Until now. X users on Thursday night started getting a notification that said “the hide your checkmark feature of X Premium is going away soon.” If those users really don’t want anyone to see a blue checkmark by their name, they’ll probably have to ditch X entirely.
The same goes for any who were recently gifted checkmarks without paying for them, which is a whole other chapter in the blue check saga. Many popular users who weren’t X Premium subscribers were recently granted blue checks anyway, and many of them were not happy about it. Now, if they can’t hide the blue check X gave them — that they didn’t want to begin with — they may just decide to wash their hands of the platform.
