Can your friends see your location on Instagram in real time?

Answer: No, but they might be able to in the future.

It appears Instagram is working on a new Friend Map feature that would do exactly as its name suggests, displaying a map of your friends’ real-time locations. The feature was originally discovered by Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer who often uncovers social media features while they’re still in the works.

According to Paluzzi, users would be able to control who can view their location on Friend Map and the data would be end-to-end encrypted. It also appears there is a Ghost Mode feature where you can hide your last active location. And you’ll be able to leave Notes, which are currently short messages at the top of your direct messaging feed, to post short updates about where you are on the map.

You can see screenshots from Paluzzi of what the feature might look like on Threads.
