Did a ransomware attack cause a candy corn shortage?

Answer: Thankfully not.

There is no limit to what cyber criminals attempt to take away from us. Earlier this year it was gasoline and meat, and now they’re coming for our candy corn.

Ferrara Candy, which produces 85 percent of the U.S.’s candy corn, was reportedly the victim of a ransomware attack earlier this month. On Oct. 9, the confectionary saw some of its systems encrypted by malicious hackers. The company is currently working with authorities to return to full operations.

But fear not — Ferrara issued a statement reassuring the public that it doesn't expect to see a shortage of candy corn this Halloween season. “We have resumed production in select manufacturing facilities, and we are shipping from all of our distribution centers across the country, near to capacity. We are also now working to process all orders in our queue,” the company said. “We want to assure consumers that Ferrara’s Halloween products are on shelves at retailers across the country ahead of the holiday.” Whew.
