Did Paul McCartney use AI to create a new Beatles song?

Answer: He sure did.

Another day, another fun (or controversial) use for artificial intelligence. Today, it’s arguably a pretty fun and harmless one: using AI to create a new Beatles song.

To be clear, the song was not written by AI. Rather, AI was used to pull vocals from a 1978 demo recording of John Lennon. The surviving Beatles previously tried to record this particular song in 1995 using that old recording, but the quality was just too poor to pull out Lennon’s vocals. That’s where AI comes in.

According to McCartney, a custom AI-powered system was used on the old track to pull out Lennon’s vocals and make them sound like they had been recorded fresh for the new song. McCartney said the new track will be released later this year.
