Did the Artemis II astronauts use an iPhone selfie camera to take pictures of Earth from space?

Answer: Yes.

An image of Earth from an orbiting satellite.
The astronauts aboard the Artemis II moon-bound spacecraft started sending back some photos of their journey over the weekend. The crew captured a few stunning photos of our home planet, though they didn’t use the camera that one might have expected.

The images feature Mission Specialist Christina Koch and Commander Reid Wiseman as they look out the spacecraft’s main cabin window toward Earth. They were shot on an iPhone 17 Pro Max, but instead of using the 48-megapixel “fusion” camera on the back of the device, the crew used the 18-megapixel front camera. It’s a testament to the advances in smartphone technology that the images still look very good even from the lower-quality camera.

The iPhones aren’t the only imaging devices the Artemis II crew is using to document their voyage. They also have a Nikon DSLR camera, which was used to capture an image of the moon as they approached. There is also a GoPro Hero4 Black mounted to the exterior of the spacecraft that was used to take a “selfie” of it.
